Top editor at The New York Times walks back controversial comment on race amid criticism

The top editor of The New York Times on Thursday, aiming to quell mounting scrutiny from both employees and outside critics, walked back a controversial comment he and the newspaper’s managing editor made last week in which they said the newspaper does not “tolerate” the use of racist language “regardless of intent.”
