A suspect is in custody after a Louisiana state trooper was found dead in Ascension Parish. The New Orleans Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms announced the arrest of 31-year-old Matthew Mire on Saturday evening in connection to the death of officer Adam Gaubert and one additional victim.

Louisiana State Police reportedly attempted to apprehend Mire in connection to several shootings early Saturday morning, but he neglected to pull his car over. Gaubert then began shooting at the officers, leading to a foot chase and ensuing manhunt.

“Preliminary information indicates that Trooper Gaubert was shot and killed in the area in which an early morning homicide occurred,” said Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police Col. Lamar A. Davis.

Mire allegedly broke into two homes and shot five people in the span of a few hours Saturday night, killing Gaubert and one other. Those who survived the shootings are all expected to recover.

Gaubert’s motive has yet to be established in the investigation, which so far involves multiple federal agencies.
